Work

Liechtenstein is a very innovative and opportunity-rich location for business. The number of jobs is higher than the number of people living here. Every day, many workers commute from neighboring countries to Liechtenstein.

Social Insurances

Social insurances provide financial protection. For example, in old age when one is no longer working, when one becomes ill, or has an accident and can no longer work. There is also financial security for relatives when the insured person dies.

This protection is ensured both by private initiative and by social insurances and social assistance.

With the exception of the health insurance, contributions must be made based on salary for the mentioned social insurances.

Employers and employees each have a specific share to bear. The state supports this social insurance system and also provides a financial contribution.

    Health Insurance

Illness and maternity are covered by health insurance. All individuals who have residence in Liechtenstein must be insured with a health insurance company. The health insurance covers the costs of medical care. The insured person has to bear a part of the costs in addition to the insurance premium.

    Old Age Provision

Provision for old age, death, and disability follows the three-pillar principle.

1st pillar: It represents the state provision.

It covers all employed persons in Liechtenstein and non-employed residents such as housewives or students.

Billing is done through the AHV-IV-FAK institution.

2nd pillar: It is the occupational provision for employees with a certain minimum income. It complements the benefits of the 1st pillar.

3rd pillar: It is the private provision. It is not mandatory and refers to private insurance or provision.

Old Age and Survivors Insurance (AHV)

Women and men born in 1957 or earlier retire at the age of 64. For those born in 1958 and later, the retirement age starts at 65. This means that they do not have to be economically active anymore and receive a pension, that is, money. To receive a pension, one must have worked for a certain time or contributed money to the AHV.

For more information, including on early retirement or postponement of the pension, please see:

      Disability Insurance (IV)

Disability pension means that people with disabilities and support needs receive money.

They should be able to cover their living expenses entirely or partially on their own. It is important for them to lead as independent a life as possible.

Integration measures: These are the top priority. People should be able to work paid jobs despite a disability. In some cases, however, this is not possible. Or not in the way they wish. Then these individuals receive a disability pension.

      The Family Equalization Fund (FAK)

The FAK grants a one-time birth allowance and a monthly child allowance (child benefit) to parents residing in Liechtenstein and all parents employed in Liechtenstein.

        Unemployment Insurance (ALV)

Unemployment means that a person has no job. This can have various reasons.

Through unemployment insurance, an insured person receives daily allowances. The daily allowances are limited. You can find forms and guides here:

        Social Assistance (WSH)

Social assistance is a program offered by the state. It supports people who do not have enough money to live. Economic social assistance is provided to individuals who receive no or insufficient money from social insurances such as unemployment insurance, IV, or AHV. The goal of social assistance is for these people to be able to support themselves again soon. At the Office for Social Services, one can make an appointment for an initial conversation.
